Allegory
An allegory is a symbolism device where the meaning of a greater, often abstract, concept is conveyed with the aid of a more corporeal object or idea being used as an example. In its most general sense it’s an extended metaphor.
Pygmalion Example: The entire play Pygmalion is an example of an allegory. The story and its characters are all a device to convey a message of greater meaning than just the plot. Eliza’s transformation and all of the characters and situations that are involved in it stand for a critique of society and its divisions built on income. |
