Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. This can be done through dialogue, action, an event, etc.
Pygmalion Example: In Act 1, Higgins states that he could “…pass that girl (Eliza Doolittle) off as a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party.” And “…the queen of Sheba.” This statement foreshadows that Higgins will transform Eliza into a socialite so effectively that she will be able to mingle at high class gatherings with no indication that she was ever a pauper. |
