Irony is a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words.
Pygmalion Example: Irony is utilized heavily in Pygmalion. One example would be in the third act when Higgins states “…I shall never get into the way of seriously liking young women: some habits lie too deep to be changed." It is ironic because Higgins is thoroughly convinced he can change all the deep rooted undesirable traits in Eliza, but he can’t change the ones within himself. |
