Sarcasm
Sarcasm is a literary and rhetorical device that is meant to mock with often satirical or ironic remarks with a purpose to amuse and hurt someone or some section of society simultaneously.
Pygmalion example: In act 2, in response to Eliza wishing to be asked to sit down, Higgins says; “Pickering: should we ask this baggage to sit down, or shall we throw her out of the window?”. Obviously, Eliza is not literal baggage nor are they going to throw her out of the window. He is mocking her and her request by being sarcastic. |
